Port Forwarding
I read in your initial posting that you have a cable modem and linksys router. I'm assuming that the linksys router is located behind the cable modem. The previous post hints that you may need to set up port forwarding for your cable modem as well as open the ports on your linksys router.

You don't do anything to the modem (not that you could even if you wanted to) The port forwarding is done on the router.
