You need to be more specific. What problem are you having?

If you want a small, effective editor, try conTEXT. It's FREE (for now), pretty cool and supports all sorts of code. I'm not a programmer but I do use it for editing html. I also replaced Notepad with it.

Very nice little editor for windows - glad you posted the link, thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it's Windows program. Thanks for pointing that out, Angelox. :)

If you're sourcing in the original db from Amra (linked above), you should have no problems with missing tables - since it creates them for you.

A great tool to use is SQLYog. Just use the Restore from SQL Dump option and you're in business. Follow Amra's original post to tweak what is needed to allow new players, should you choose to run it publicly.

Context editor is an excellent tool, and also you will need WinHex, another neat tool for browsing binary data. Now if only Context dealt with binary data...

If you do decide to run it publicly you should know there isn't a good balance on the server. I would wipe the character/account table completely, review Loot drops, nerf the buff bot and revamp some higher level items. It's a huge project that I didn't want to invest in. But the content is amazing. With a lot of work it could be an awesome db. Just my opinion.

But a lot of people liked it the way it was. And that's cool with me :)

I have the original DB without my modifications if you would like that. I will see if I can get a host somewhere.

oh and don't forget to change access levels (as john pointed out) on the accounts and zones if you choose not to wipe the player-base. It will prevent new accounts from being able to zone into the server. Other than that good luck.

so ...

no one want to host this once-popular custom database?

TheLieka 01-10-2008 05:11 PM

I'd be happy to host it, but I don't have the time to actually work on it. So it would need a dev staff.

the database is well developed so i think further development would be uneccessary

I felt nostalgic, put the Abyss back online one day for about 35 minutes. Me and my lead GM walked around, looked at each other, and said "f**k this" and took it down again.

Way to unbalanced, way to "simple", hacks galore, many quests and terrain maps broken, utilizes only about 1/4th the entire world in content, and without a constant GM/Dev presence, people simply quit. Amra's advice is best; wipe everything and start clean. Or better yet, let the classic memory stay a memory and lead players to new, fresh servers.

It was popular while it was up. So if that's your thing, give it a whirl. Just don't ever log yourself in ;) You might get inspired to "fix" something.
