Whole Computer crashes

I've been trying to play EQ emulator but my whole game randomly freezes anywhere from 5mins of play to 30 mins of play. I am currently running an..

Intel core 2 duo SPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz 3.17GHz
Mem = 4.00GB

On windows vista home premium

Not only does my game freeze, but my whole computer crashes and reboots. I have had minimal problems with any other new or old game.
I have tried turning of a CPU and also have tried changing the compatibility and had no luck. I also reinstalled the game once to double check. The game runs fine and pretty smooth until the whole computer stops.

Any ideas of what might be wrong?

Mcbaine2 09-29-2009 02:45 AM

Wow. Does your computer ever just do this random shut down without playing everquest?

You might have some bad RAM, which did the exact same thing my new computer did once.

Might want to take out all but one stick of RAM and see if the issue keeps appearing. That way you can keep switching out the sticks to find out which ones work. If the computer only crashes when you have that certain stick in you know its bad RAM.

Also check for any type of malware.

Try opening up your system log that will log any system crashes.
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer
Let us know if you find anything in there that might look bad.

-------EDIT-------
Make sure that your system isn't overheating also.

chushque7 09-29-2009 02:49 PM

Mcbaine2,

This is the first time my computer has crashed like this since a last summer. Other things seem to run fine. I checked out the Event viewer and couldn't find anything directly related that I am aware of. I'm not exactly sure what to look for though.

So..This happens in the summer. Heat related possibly?

chushque7 09-30-2009 12:01 AM

sorry no, i got my computer last summer brand new. Hasn't crashed like that since i got it.

Tharkun 09-30-2009 12:22 AM

are you running eq in XP compatability mode?

chushque7 09-30-2009 05:23 PM

Yes, I have tried right clicking the shortcut and trying different compatablity modes. One normal attempt to play i got a blue screen(hardware error) before it reset. Odd thing is that other programs work fine.

Speedz 10-13-2009 02:03 AM

Ok, after a long annoying run with this issue, and making a launch util to set affinity and utilize easy host editing, nothing has worked period.

I have figured out "what" is happening, but I can't seem to find the cure.

My specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo (centrino2)
4gb ram
Nvidia 9800m 1gb
Windows 7 build 7100 (I have tried 32 and 64 bit no difference)

I have determined it is not my internet as other systems (AMD based) run fine and a Intel Core solo based system with a crap intel vid card and 1gb ram running xp with no tweaks at all. It works well, just heats up too much running EQ.

I have also determined it is not due to anything not set according to everyone's posts here.

It is also not a result of the client version, as both SOF and Titanium do it equally and regardless of if I set core affinity or not.

What I have discovered is that when I seem to run (movement in game) normally my CPU clock is max and when I am in slow motion the CPU is throttling to about half.

I have set my power management in windows to not do CPU power saving, but it doesn't change anything. My bios does not have a power save setting, so that fix doesn't apply either or at least it's not enabled for the user to change.

So, what I "think" is the issue for those that can't get anything to work (myself included), is that we need to force CPU clock to max. So either I am using the wrong search strings or it just doesn't exist, but I can't find how to force this in windows 7. I know it can be forced in Linux, but this laptop isn't easily linux ready (some drivers just don't exist yet mainly wireless).

So on this note, if anyone knows of a trustworthy utility or windows tweak to do this, please speak up.

colemantis441 10-15-2009 07:31 AM

I tried all of the above, even doing some other things not listed such as updated all video drivers, updating my bios, etc. Nothing worked.

But, I finally figured it out and I hope my solution will help others with the same problem.

Try updating directx. You might think you don't need to because you have the latest version (version 10), but you can install the latest components for version 10 at their website.

Fixed everything for me. Simple as that.

colemantis441 10-15-2009 03:07 PM

Nevermind. It just happened to work flawlessly after I upgraded directx to tease me and give me hope. Now the problem is back. :x

Could you test something for me.

Get this utility http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml and test what the throttle vs core clock are when you have your slow motion moments vs when it runs fine.

Basically see if you can duplicate my findings. When I am not experiencing slow motion both core clock and throttle matched. When I have the slow down the throttle is half of core clock.

Also ANYONE that can't seem to find a fix please do this as well and post findings.

Tylier 11-05-2009 09:05 PM

I have done everything that this thread has listed and nothing has worked. It doesn't crash or anything it just flickers and quits after I double click on the short cut. It does not give any type of message, but it just suddenly quits the program after it flickers twice.

cybernine186 11-05-2009 09:54 PM

I haven't read all of these posts by everyone but have you tried downloading the CPU drivers from the manufacture? I had the same issue and I run AMD Dual core (black edition, overclocked) and after I installed some of AMD's utilities and CPU driver it worked just fine without ANY other settings or software.

trevius 11-05-2009 10:04 PM

Tylier, normally that problem is caused by desktop or EQ resolution settings. The FAQ in my sig mentioned resolution issues briefly. Basically, you need to try adjusting the resolution of your deskop to something normal like 1024X768, and get EQ working and then adjust your resolutions again once it is working to something more play-able. You might also need to adjust your eqclient.ini file res settings.

Tylier 11-05-2009 10:13 PM

the res setting dont fix the problem but i am currently trying to see if I can upgrade drivers

MrMaggot 11-21-2009 05:12 PM

Ok. I have tried everything I can think of but am still having no luck. My client crashes when I zone sometimes and often crashes after selecting my character. Also, the models are freezing up and there are no animation movements. I've updated the cpu drivers, ran in SP3 compatability mode, and tried run first. All of them produce the same results. Any ideas?

hey guys, i've ran EQemu for about a month, was working very well. And then my hard drive blew and i lost all my things, got it back yesterday and installed video card driver,sound driver,all windows update. When i try to open EQ now screen goes black, arrow changes to gold and it takes me back to desktop without any error notice. I've tried all the things on wiki and in the forums and it still doesn't work. Running AMD turion laptop dual core 2.2ghz 4gb of ram windows vista 64 bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

nosfentora 12-23-2009 02:57 PM

have you tried lowering either the desktop resolution and/or the eq resolution? Was your EQ install on the drive that died? If you ran it on another drive, you might need to re-install it.

Xalander 12-24-2009 04:51 AM

i've already tried changed desktop resolution, couldn't change eq resolution ,cant find the file to change it. I've reinstalled eq titanium 3 times already...

You can change the resolution externally by browsing to your EQ root folder and running OptionsEditor.exe or manually editing EQClient.ini;

Code:

[VideoMode]
Width=1280
Height=1024
WidthWindowed=1280
HeightWindowed=1024
WindowedWidth=1280
WindowedHeight=1024
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
FullscreenRefreshRate=0

To your preferred settings.

Xalander 12-28-2009 06:08 AM

installed windows 7 today, tried the resolution things you said and it doesn't work either... guess im gonna give up wasted too much time on this.

pfyon 12-28-2009 11:05 AM

Make sure you have directX 9c installed, as I think someone else said directX 10 doesn't include some components from 9 that are needed for EQ.

I used that utility during my slow downs. It showed me that my CPU Core Clock AND Throttle plummet to about 50%. My CPU Load spiked at that time as well. CPU Frequency took a nose dive to about 0, and Voltage went down to about 60% of the usual amount.

However, I think my number one problem is overheating. My CPU temp rises until the slowdown, when it goes back down again. It seems to slowdown around 80C, which makes sense.

Any ideas about what I can do to alleviate this? I had a similar problem playing WoW and I fixed it by putting my laptop on top of books to increase airflow. The thing is I can play games like Half-life 2 on this computer. I'm hoping it's a something I can fix with my settings.

The first thing that came to mind was that perhaps my Processor is doing all the work while my video card is lagging behind. Here are my system specs from dxdiag:

Oh and here is what I've done so far:
Reinstalled display drivers
Reinstalled Directx
Downgraded settings in EQ, turning off anything I can and reducing resolution
Cleaned out my system (turning off unnecessary processes, etc.)

The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer 1.1.4 for WinXP/Vista/Win7 (which is the only one I installed):

PAOtis 01-18-2010 11:39 PM

I think I had installed that last time I tried to play EQEmu, but I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Rhombus 01-31-2010 01:55 PM

EQemu keeps freezing when I try to connect to a server. I've tried changing the compatibilities, using all of them, and changing the affinity. Nothing seems to work. My computer uses windows 7, and when i installed EQemu on my laptop (uses vista) it worked fine. Anyone have any ideas what I should do?

RiddlN 02-03-2010 05:04 PM

I have tried every method available to me, and it still lags. When trying to install SP3, nothing happens, and when trying to install the hotfix patch - it says, "Not enough storage is available to process this command." I've run CCleaner and everything. BAH BAH please help!

Tsuken 02-12-2010 07:40 PM

when I put this in the target box:
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 eqgame.exe patchme

Nothing happens. Everquest doesn't start at all. The cmd window blinks for a split second, but then nothing.

I'm using windows xp.

trevius 02-12-2010 07:53 PM

I think that option may only work for Windows Vista or later. You will probably need to try one of the other fixes like updating to SP3 and using the AMD Optimizer if your CPU is AMD.

metallicahead 02-17-2010 10:24 AM

Every time I choose a server and click play i get a black screen and the game just locks up. I am running windows vista 64 bit with AMD tri core. I tried all the things that were mentioned in the thread. But nothing seems to be working.

I tried compatibility mode with all the different modes, did nothing
I dled the run first program followed the instructions still black screen of death.
I did the task manager thing and the CPU was already set on CPU 0

I tried messing with the resolution in the game that didnt work
My drivers are updated.

I really dont know what I am doing wrong.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks!

ronzer 03-02-2010 07:24 PM

Not sure if this will work for other people, but it worked for me.

Win7 64bit, Athlon 64 x2

I made the EQ shortcut use compatibility mode for WinXP SP3, and just under that I checked the "Disable desktop composition" checkbox as well as "Run this program as an administrator". Works flawlessly.

Sebastionleo 06-06-2010 12:29 PM

I have this one working with Runfirst, but how do I make it work if I want to use eqwindows?

wendolyne 09-07-2010 01:09 PM

God im having problems with this... I never had any problem with this when i used windows XP... now i use W7 and i got it to work but its its very laggish. like i get fps drop.. i used the Affinity method in the process handler... meaby i should set some of the .exes to different core? I got a dual core so... i got 2 to choose from... annoying work since i box 6 chars:/

Running Athlon X2 dual core 6000+ (3.0 ghz) and 6 gig rams...

It works flawlessly when i only run 1 instance... but when i start 2 it begins to chop lagg...

Thanks for great guide doh. ive tried everything so far :/

wendolyne 09-09-2010 03:45 PM

Strange, it started working better if i set the affinity my self. not using the shortcut/target command.

Arlum 09-27-2010 08:25 PM

I'm also having the issue where I get to login screen...login bar fills up to 'loading world" etc.... starts to load the game window in the games resolution - then im kicked back to the login screen.

I've tried almost everythign in these threads i'll report back if i figure something out though :(

Microdia 09-28-2010 03:14 AM

My friend has a AMD 64x2, with windows 7, 8 gigs of ram, 1 gig video card. Here is the issue with his system, and we can't figure it out. He can play one toon, flawless, two flawless...third box...even with eq on all MIN settings. HUGE lag. My computer is almost 8 years old and I can 5 box. I have followed every single page of this thread and the other thread about the same thing.. Tried everything, from core optimizing, compatibility modes, power options, affinities, even reinstalls.. You name it. No idea why it's lagging so bad upon the entrance of a third box. He should be able to do MUCH more on this system. Not sure what else to do. It's very frustrating.

Thanks for any help!

Does the pagefile have enough room on the drive it is located to grow?

walk 01-04-2011 10:30 PM

Has anyone figured out how to launch (SoD client) with /affinity X using shortcuts in Windows 7 (x64) ?

Or, any way?

I have a 4-core 8-thread cpu (i7 950) if I launch one copy of Sod it will set affinity to cpu 0. If I launch a 2nd copy it will set affinity of that client to cpu 1 - problem here is that is the same cpu (hyperthreading).

If I launch a 3rd copy it will use.... cpu 0 again. :-x It's like it doesn't understand anything beyond 2-core 2-thread (non-HT) cpus.

I have to manually set the affinity with taskman, which is a pain with boxing 4+ clients..

mustafa88 02-09-2011 11:10 PM

Wanted to take the time to thank you. Completely fixed my problem. had characters models that didnt move or my character would move slow while the rest of the critters moved faster than me. Now i can enjoy myself.

It was really getting on my nerves chasing something down that ran faster than me.

Happy hunting and thank you again.
