whats the xp rate on this "server" I cleaned an apartment on their all day and didnt level once... I think its broken

Congdar 07-23-2009 11:10 PM

It's a custom server, apartment cleaning is an alternate advancement. Applies to Character Building only.

I thought I had fixed cleaning XP. Oh well, I see the trouble. Needs a reboot, 1 point.

majorheadache 07-24-2009 02:04 AM

Well I am glad you all have a feel of what is going on.... its a shame that one bad apple has to ruin the bunch, especially to the point that your hosting site has to pull the plug! I'm a Network Engineer by trait and can tell you that even working on all of the best equipment in the world with constant OS and firmaware upgrades, there truley are ppl out there just simply looking for a bigger challenge! Some of Cisco's later Pix Firewall's and the ASA line that is taking its place right now when implemented properly can on the fly shut down any EXTERNAL DOS attacks thrown at it. I would be interested in what they are using and what actually took place, if you need an extra set of eyes. At any rate, good luck, you guys ARE doing a great thing and I think you should setup a donation line again. I am sure most of us would be willing to offer some affordable sum, especially at times like this.

What is this "outside" you refer to? <confused>

anj112207 07-24-2009 02:37 AM

hope this gets figured out quick

Dantes 07-24-2009 05:37 AM

Miss PEQ, I do.

henry_z 07-24-2009 05:57 AM

any more infos about PEQ server now? hope it will up in this weakend

demonstar55 07-24-2009 06:08 AM

I've gotten bored and started recreating my toons on my own server :P and have been running into interesting issues! (think I figured it out now!)

badplayer 07-24-2009 08:37 AM

Which one of you assholes connects to PEQ with FIOS (or equivalent), it sure isn't any of us 512kb/s upload capped people dos'ing the server on accident.

It's not just FIOS. I was talking to someone that had a 10Mb/50Mb with Cox. /drool There are quite a few high-bandwidth services available these days. At any rate, I sure hope it's up by this weekend.

firesyde424 07-24-2009 10:13 AM

I've been getting actual work done since the server has been down. My wife would say this is a good thing, but I say Play on!!

It just blows my mind that nobody is able to track down the IP of the guy after all this time. It's been going on for weeks. It probably can't be tracked by the provider and needs to be measured on the PEQ server so I doubt the ISP will be able to tell you anything.

It's so easy to monitor the bandwith and ban the IP that this story just makes no sense to me.

You're forgetting that people are doing this in their free time (CD set out this week(end) for monitoring bandwidth usage, or was that last week?)

Dantes 07-24-2009 10:33 AM

Well this downtime has reawakened my desire to learn how to create and manage a private server. I don't intend to replace any of the very popular servers nor could I. It's just something that I need to do for myself. Plus attending 500 person strong LANs might help with testing of it.

Nor'Easter here I come.

Vast 07-24-2009 11:10 AM

So what server is the most stable & most similar to PEQ to dick around on while it's down? Are there any real contenders?

majorheadache 07-24-2009 11:49 AM

Well just for a speedy enjoyment, and the obvious curiosity, I remade my WAR, BRD, and MNK so far on the Raid Addicts svr right there in the "Preferred" catagory. You start out on some custom island with your Epic 1.0 in hand and a few gems for quick plat on the customized NPC merchants. Alot of the good ole favs are able to be purchased from them after you make a little plat. There is also a nervous mother looking for her child on dock who gives your pair of JBoots for finding him. And finally, you CAN play a melee class or what have you w/out needing buff bots tagging behind as you can purchase for free lots of potions of haste, c heals, quick heals, clarity, hp buffs, etc. If you dont think you will be making 85+ and raiding with all the ppl there, it is still a neat setup for lvling quick to 20 then you can always delete it.

"If I give you a penny for your thoughts, but I have to put my 2 cents in, where are all those pennies going? There's your deficit solution!" :D

That sounds awful, where's PEQ.

elation 07-24-2009 07:04 PM

Darn. I really wanted to play this weekend. :( Nap time.

TimAwesome 07-24-2009 07:07 PM

Really wish there was another good legit server.

Talisan 07-24-2009 07:31 PM

Darn, and I had just gotten a little bit of plat too :D

But I really really really appreciate all the folks that spend their spare time doing maintenance and all the work to keep this server up. I missed playing EverQuest, and now I get to have it back again. That, in itself, is awesome!

And I know you only hear from all of us when something is wrong (which I suppose is analogous to biting the hand that feeds you O_O) so I wanted to take the opportunity to put in my thanks!

So thank you!

Agreed. Personally, I'm sick of the "hey guys let's make a hub zone, let's place all the teleporters to every zone, add a bunch of tier gear, and make custom raid encounters" stuff. Because that's what is available to the public atm other than PEQ. (well, besides V/T Zek)

I would agree if there were enough players to fully populate them. I've only picked EQ back up on PEQ since last Saturday, but I never saw more than 300-some people online. Having 2 good servers would split that population in half. In the case of an outage like this, it would be nice to have, but we really would need more players to necessitate a second server like PEQ.

So anyway... was reeeeeally hoping this would get fixed by tonight. :P

kalzin230 07-24-2009 11:49 PM

...is this why www.projecteq.net is down/unreachable?

Theodophilus 07-25-2009 12:00 AM

Any new word on the peq outtage?

e.g. further details on the nature of the supposed attacks, when negotiations with the host to bring the server back up will start, etc.

Are there any network traces or logs to analyze? Does the eqemu engine log much of anything?

EQ was obviously built on top of IRC; it might have some vulnerability to generic IRC attacks, or normal traffic for EQ might show up as IRC attacks to some intrusion detection tool. (e.g. false positives).

Dibalamin 07-25-2009 12:26 AM

Wow, that sucks. I just caught up on the thread. I hope you cats get this figured out soon!

badplayer 07-25-2009 07:13 AM

Why does nobody know anything. The host can't help with this problem, all he see's is "incoming spam attack from PEQ". Is there some kind of plan like installing bandwith monitoring software and trying to get the host to reconnect then actually banning the IP responsible this time or is the guy running the server on vacation or what? If nobody has time to do this stuff I'm sure many people are willing to volunteer.

This is madness

The situation has already been explained. We will know more from FnW when he's back from his business trip and is able to talk with the hosting company in more detail.

brownc1 07-25-2009 09:27 AM

Wow, seriously, some people need to chill out. CD said that FNW was away on business, not a vacation first of all. Second of all, the problem will get straightened out, and the server will come back up. It always has and I expect it always will until someone makes the decision to pull the plug (unlikely).

At this point Im guessing that CD knows just as much about this as the rest of us do, which is not much. Getting on here, posting rants about how no one is doing anything, how bad we want to play, etc. is not helping the situation and is likely just causing frustration to those who are tasked with running this TEST server.

I think many times we tend to forget that testing not leisure is the main thrust of this project. Don't misunderstand, I wish the server was up too, but there is no point in ranting here when the situation is out of our (and CD's capable) hands.

Negative. Nobody said if it was a single IP which would indicate either a flood attack or poorly configured MQ scripts on a high bandwith connection or if it was from many IP's which would be more of a client/server configuration problem. From the way he said it in this thread, it sounded as if the server itself was compromised and being used to launch dos attacks or something. Since it only takes all of 5 minutes to determine if the problem is from a single IP or many IP's, it seemed extremely odd to me that nobody knows after weeks of it going on.

Since you claim that the problem has already been explained "steve", you tell me which one it is:

A) Server compromised and being used for attacks

B) Client/Server configuration problem

C) Flood from a single IP

D) Flood from many IP's indicating the macroquest build people are using is a problem when on a high bandwith connection

badplayer qualifies as major ass-troll extraordinaire. get a life.
It's not your server, lose the sense of entitlement. I hope they bring it up and leave it locked for a day just to spite dipshits like you.

Lol im sorry but thats just funny Cow :)

brownc1 07-25-2009 01:08 PM

I dont know why you are so fixated on it being MQ2 over a FIOS connection. I heard that suggested as a possible problem one time and you have jumped all over that as the culprit of all of PEQs problems.

That being said CD does not have physical access to the box. FNW does but is out of town and if he knows the problem, likely the reason we havent heard anything is that FNW simply hasnt passed the information to CD.

Man the server goes down for a couple of days and people flip out and start pointing fingers and throwing crap every where. I hate to think what would have happened had some of these people been here in december when the server was down for almost a month.

Badplayer, if you cant take the server being down for a little bit, its time to either go play on another server, or find a new game. We dont need your impatience and disrespect for the people running the server and the host that is hosting it for FREE. We are a low priority on their list, we are not paying for hosting therefore we are at the bottom of the list.
