Paradigma (PvP,Custom Rules + Content)
After customizing the server for a year we are close to be able to start a beta. Most of the code is already working and the missing features will be added during or after the beta test. Close means january or early february.
We try to build a completely customized strategy mmorpg server. That means all zones will be customized, you will be able to fight for locations, take over complete zones, set taxes if you own a town, place and command npcs. Towns will have npc controlled guilds for casual and solo players. The relations between the different guilds and towns will be quite important. A guild owning a town will also have control over the local npc guild and will be allied with it. The tutorial is open for everyone, leaving it isn't possible until we start the beta. If you want to know more about how things work and what kind of features we have follow the links below. Important: - Please follow the guide at http://www.projectf.org/wiki/wikka.p...=StartingGuide if you want to play at our server - Keep in mind that we support the Titanium client. Playing with another version might be possible but will have some bugs and zone not accessable for you. - If you want to know what makes this server special take a look here http://www.projectf.org/wiki/wikka.p...adigmaFeatures |
That sounds amazing, aza. I was just contemplating myself how to make player-controlled cities/zones. That's awesome. Can't wait to see how you did it.
|
This sounds very interesting. I hope you guys complete your project and succeed :).
|
Aza is an amazing coder. He has some pretty major hacks in the server code on Paradigma. I have been helping out a tiny little bit for the past week or so. Mainly just tweaking pets a bit so far, but I have to say he has done some pretty neat things. You can come check out the first zone right now, you wont get to see 95% of the features until the beta goes live but at least you can kinda see what we have going on.
I hate to say this cause I know Devn00b will come yell about how the server can't be close to GW's. But the taking over cities and some of that is definately similar with a ton of other variables/stuff to do added in. Don't get the wrong idea, this is nothing like guildwars, the taking over cites and camps aspect of it however is close. |
server will be locked at 01/01/07 to get everything ready for the beta. it will stay locked for about a month and all character related data will get removed. so if you want to take a look at the server before the beta start, do it the next 4 days ;)

ROFL LOL
I love it |
Can this server limit the amount of expansions players can access so as to keep the population in a reasonably small area? if there is too much space accessable then the relatively small player population would be too spread out. I haven't seen any of these emu servers with more than 100 people on at once ever.
|
we only use antonica atm, all other zones are locked
|
awesome. I and some friends shall be joining for beta i hope.
What are the PVP rules as far as teams go? i didn't see it when i read the wiki. |
well we removed almost all rules ;) there is no level limit and it's all versus all. Instead of rules we use a kind of social punishment system.
- If you kill someone who is guilded you will get a faction hit with the guild - If you hit someone out of the level range you get a 1 minute Outcast Flag for a kill 100 minutes. Consider someone first before attacking, it will tell you if you are at range or not. - If you got killed in PvP you are not allowed to enter the zone again the next 10 minutes. - If you killed someone you will get PvP points for it and Exp. Take a look at the Adventure Merchants of a friendly guild to spend them - We are also collecting data like your kills, your deaths, your killstreak and the names of your opponents. (Same for PvE btw) take a look here for a short summary i hope that's the info you were looking for ;) |

I wouldnt worry about it really, unless the 100 min flags stack heh, Id blast through the healer in no time and just wait the timer off before going around the guards or merchants.
|
well you don't need to remove the rule itself. you just need to modify it a little bit. i'm going to add a pvp check. if you hit someone or if you get hit you will be flagged as engaged for 1 minute. if you heal or buff someone who is engaged a level check will be done. if any of the opponents isn't in level range you will get a 10 minutes outcast flag.
|
You guys sound like excellent coders.. mind if I steal all of your brains one day as part of my mad scientist scheme to finally learn C++?
Good job on the server so far (although, admittedly, said from a non-played perspective), you sound like you have quite an interesting setup going there. Very well thought out system and the changes you seem to be making are quick, concise and well implimented. I wish you luck on the server. Quote:

thanks ;)
lets see how ppls will like it.. the beta is mostly a code + hardware test. world is mostly customized already but we still miss a lot of quests and content we wanted to add |
Also, Make sure you put limits on who can have what buffs on them.
Resist buffs Damage Shields(lvl 40-50 mage/druid DS= death to low level melee) Stat Buffs(High lvl str buffs can change an avg of 10 dmg to 20 dmg depending how the damage for melee is calced) HP buffs(1k+hp at lvl 10 ;o) Hpsymbols A lvl 10 with lvl 30/40/50 buffs is insane to kill. Or make a Flag that allowes the lower lvl to have buff, but removes all penalties for haveing the low level killed ;o Can still help the lower level, level but if they go into pvp with buffs, some lvl 30/40/50 could come along and kill them in 10 secs if they causing trouble to other lower level people ;o Or If you Engage in Pvp! All buffs that are +so many levels over your level get removed ;o |
well good suggestion mrfix186 .. best way would be to allow beneficial buffing + healing only at groups, allied guilds or raids. If someone is 20 levels below the caster (not the spell to avoid possible exploits) he + the caster will get outcast flagged for the duration of the spell.
|
I say keep all players able to buff/heal all other players, even enemy combatants! Makes the game fun and interesting.
If you run into a level 10 with +1000HP buff on him then find someone to dispel his ass! Unique strategy and fun encounters is what makes a pvp server good. I played on EqLive Sullon Zek and it was almost precisely like this (just no healing/buffing enemies). I used to be a pvp hardcore nerd, and i desire to relive that dorky glory! |
Played as Bartlor Greenbane on Sullen zek ;o
Could you also fix Dispells ;o, on most servers you can resist dispell, and as a fact you shouldn't be able to resist it at all. |
if it would be me i would agree nancy . but we try to build a strategy server for pvp and pve players, where both kind of players are needed to run a successful guild or alliance. that's why we kind of punish those "player killers" to give the pve players a partial protection while not disallowing the pvpers to pvp ;)
ps: going to take a look at dispells |

if we remove the rules we would have a pure pvp server .. and that's not what we want to build. our idea is a strategy mmorpg server where you can't just run around and kill everyone. so basicly a mix between pve and pvp.
|
If you want to host a PVP server then please make it have maximum potential PVP! Griefers get their come-uppance by making a name for themselves and getting attacked on sight by many people, corpse camped or denied grouping and guilding.
Having buffs, heals and everything available to cast wherever a player desires allows for more intricate, fun and rewarding pvp battles. Running to save the life of a lowbie being ganged up on, lowbies ganging up on a high level greifer, etc. I was an Evil on Sullon Zek and numerous times i would have willingly healed a Good to help him kill a Nuetral that i knew and dispised, simply because of that Nuetral's notoriety. I did engage in combat with Goods as my temporary allies sometimes as a means to an end. Granted I would always look for the best opportunity to stab them in the back as soon as i had a chance and didn't require their assistance any longer ~ I was Evil in my roleplay spirit ~ My brother and I would also go gank noobies in Gfay in order to lure groups of high level Goods to chase us around so we could play tricks and kill them in the forest. No better way to get a big fight going than by picking on the weak so they cry for help. |
i understand what you mean nancy but the problem is that such a kind of server won't be any fun at all for ppls who don't want to pvp a lot. we will see if our concept won't work we will change it. that's what beta is for
|
The advantage of having an open-source project like EQEmu is, anyone can run their own server and customize it however they see fit. aza77's server ideas sound appetizing to someone like me, who has never played once on PvP, but wouldn't mind giving it a try. If his server was hard-core PvP, I wouldn't even bother.
I think what they have planned is perfect. Might take some time to balance things out, but it's a great concept. You can ask if they would change a feature, but if the admin doesn't want to, no sense continuing trying to convince him he's wrong. :) |
When I played Sullen Zek as an evil, I would camp Misty thicket/Gfay for 8+hours strait. I know for a fact I caused atleast 15 people to never play Sullen zek again. But on Eqemu, no way in hell am i going to do that, i could destroy the pop of some pvp server easy and make it suck. Need pops for the high levels, and blowing apart the low levels makes it hard to have targets and good even level fights.
|
I also caused many players to quit Sullon Zek if not Everquest out of frustration and i am certainly not going to be as hard-core as i was then.
My problem is that i crave some of that intense pvp so much and want to relive those glorious times, that i am likely to be disappointed by players scared to actually engage in PVP on a PVP server. Sullon Zek unfortunately like all PVP servers somehow had the majority of the players being scared to actually go forth and engage in PVP. Most of them were there to powerlevel and get awesome gear for 'future pvp ownage'. This of course led to awesome ganking on my part of hopeless idiots that didn't have a clue how to fight. I am going to assume this will be the same problem with this new server, however much more so because the player base will be so small. Hence i will have to be careful not to be too aggressive or people will leave and not come back. People who join the server should damn well realize it is a PVP server and expect to engage, whether they are prepared or not, in PVP! |
Yes PvP should be a challenge and induce an hefty ammount of paranoia in everyone on the server. But mindless slaughter of helpless victims when someone feels like it should imho not be tolerated.
Are you actually proud to have scared people of the server? |
The attitudes above are why a PVP server never lasted on EQEmu.
Mindless slautering of people 20+ levels below them, the "I am the greatest everyone else sucks", I refuse to play on a EQEmu PVP server due to the attitudes and bahing in OOC etc. However this server even I may install EQ, after 18+ months of not playing, to try out. |
Indeed. Taking an overly powerful character and mowing down a bunch of noobs may make the PKers feel like they accomplished something, but in the grand scheme, they are weak little tools who fade from existence almost as quickly as they appeared. This type of PvPer is almost not worth noticing.
The disdain >I< personally have for PvP players in general is the trash talking. It's bad enough on blue servers to hear people boast about how awesome they are [in a video game] because they have no life... but some of the crap that comes from the Zek'ers was apalling. That whole "attitude" thing. It's like they can never say a nice thing to anyone. It's always an insult, always a challenge... and I am sure some of that comes from the PvP environment itself. Only the strong survive... The PvPers I respect are those who have incredible skills, do their thing without making a nuisance of themselves or bringing a bad name to themselves, their guild, or their server. I know many of these players, and enjoy running with them still. In blue mode. Don't want my ass kicked. ;) |
I agree with you John, I love to PvP I just get tired of the trash talking and everyone bitching the whole time I play in ooc. The Paradigma server however is not a hardcore pvp server, that was never the intention. It is a mixed pvp/pve server with a ton of unique features that you wont see on any other server. Although I have been slacking and not doing anything the past few weeks to help with development, I can say that I think everyone can enjoy it, the Hardcore PvPers can PvP and take cities if they want, and the PvE players can do their thing as well.
It's really different, there are camps that you can throw down that only effect you and your party and replenish mana and health and all kinds of neat things on the server. Not sure how much Aza wants to reveal about the neat little items like I just mentioned but there are a bunch of little things like that. I don't think anyone will be disappointed. You can be ANY race/class combo. ( Dwarf Mage anyone? ) There are custom quests scattered around. To keep up with the current progress of the server check this page out. You can blame the 20% Status of Class Balancing on me, I'm supposed to be in charge of that and have been slacking lately. Look for that percent to go up in the weeks leading up to our Beta Launch at the end of the month :) http://www.projectf.org/wiki/wikka.p...ServerProgress |
I never trash talked when I played, hell i didnt talk at all except to taunt the higher levels to hunt me and protect their lower levels , plus if the person i killed didnt got nuts, threaten, talk about being a gm, id leave them alone for few hours ;o What I enjoyed is being able to still kill in the zone while 5 or so people 20+ levels to me tried to kill me ;o
I enjoyed tying up those 5 or so people who would be killing fellow evils in the higher level areas ;o I also enjoyed the feeling that if i did /who and someone on the other team was there and was higher then me, they would attempt to kill me no matter what. |
Yeah I'm not sure how it is on some of the pvp servers. Only one I ever played on was Guild Wars. Was like a bunch of 12 year olds smacking each other around with their Epeens 24/7.
Just thought of another feature Aza has worked hard to implement that you will not see on another Emu server. The fear line of spells works correctly. It does not just stun you for a few seconds here, and the fear pathing actually works :) ( as a side note this is not 100% working in every zone, either Aza or one of our developers has got to enable fear pathing in each zone and set it up to work. Not 100% sure how many zones have it so far but I know some do work. ) Also I do not know how fear works in pvp, I assume you can fear PC's but it will have to either be a question for Aza or wait for the beta in a couple weeks. |
See mrfix, you sound like one of those PvPers I would respect because you only went out of your way to taunt people who deserved it. ;)
I too am going to play on this server. I haven't played on many others, aside from testing a feature now and then. I can't wait. |
Its not mindless; it is war. I am not playing to spam ooc with taunts and parade around thinking im the toughest thing alive. I play to engage in exciting, adrenaline pumping battles.
PVP is the funnest way everquest can be played as it adds a superior level of danger and thrill of accomplishment. If someone goes and picks on lowbies, then they can call in for assistance which is exactly what good PVP is all about; Escalating conflicts in varied zones with varying levels of players. Just because i was a PVP maniac, played an evil character with roleplay in mind and slaughtered noobies for sport doesn't make me a bad or uncivilized person. I was always helpful with other players, kind and respectful to anyone unless they had proven themselves to be jerks first. Edit: I should clarify that i spent the vast majority of my PVPing vs even, higher level players or much greater numbers of players than I or my 1-2 comrades. I only usually killed noobs to raise a lynch mob in a noob zone that me and my friends could then sneakily pick apart and destroy. If you despise some player because you think he's a worthless bastard slaying noobies, then guess what? you can do the sweetest thing and kill him yourself! And, you will feel like a million dollars when you watch his corpse collapse on the ground with a short grunt of expiration. Think of it as though a Dragon was attacking a village of farmers. Would you be angry at the dragon because it is more powerful than the weak farmers? it is 'owning noobs' unfairly? NO, you would put together a a force and get over there and slay that dragon and enjoy doing so. Same goes for high level players attacking 'noob villages'. A PVP server is for conflict; just try and enjoy it. |
LOL Nancy. You describe the senseless slaughter of the innocent almost poetically. :) But I do see your point. Raising hatred against you and your kin by doing inhumane, inconceivable acts is in fact what breathes life into true PvP, and you are correct. Again, my disdain comes from the constant brow-beating and shit talking that happens both in and out of game.
Example (I do not recall exact details, but here's the jist); Our blue servers were merged long ago. On our forums, "Zekkers" came and talked so much smack and made life so miserable for our forum admins, they nearly shut down the forums. They spent most of their time blocking accounts and IPs to keep the community "safe" from these vile, disgusting beasts. Btw, I do not look at EQ PvPers any differently than I look at those who play UT or other fragfest online games. It seems whenever players get into a mano-e-mano combat scenario, all sensibility goes out the window. Which is why I choose to not PvP. I am not saying they are "wrong", I am saying I avoid them because it's not my style. The thing I think is "wrong" is taking it outside the game, and being an intolerable asshole IRL because of your in-game personna (not you, i mean "yous" in general haha). But in the end, you are 100% correct. And this server will offer a fantastic way that I can raise your head on a pike for killing me unjustly!! /taunt on |
Yeah, I totally agree with you mostly. But I have a hunch that most of the shit-talking on the Zeks came from teens, and I doubt many of us eqemu users are teens.
If you want I can help you out and teach you how to fight when the server launches ~ I have a lot of experience with EQ PVP and know many tricks and ways to fight or flee. |
I have a couple guild mates that came from a zek server (they started there). They claim to be pretty good... so I might have to challenge them... to try and defeat YOU. hehe... how fun.
|
Gah, to make my setup for pvp or, pve to supply the pvp peeps gear ;o
Rng/shm/clr Vs war/shm/clr How different is the AC/HP of top gear between Ranger and War on the server ;/ <3 bard ;o Shadowstep song... makes you unkillable in some zoned ;-) |
