Xbox server
Ok I had thought about this a long time ago when I was first interested in the project and I ran acrossed a thread about it and fired the idea back up. But what do you think of a Xbox server for EQEmu. The Xbox will be running Linux most likely not Redhat maybe SuSe or I belive it was debian was also a good option.
__________________ Here are some stats. | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intel Celeron 733 MHz CPU 64 MB of RAM (enough for most Linux applications) nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card (no relivance) Dolby Digital AC97 sound card (no relivance) 8 or 10 GB hard disk DVD drive (no relivance) 10/100 Ethernet 4 USB ports ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know the stats are really not so great especially only having 64Mb of RAM but I was thinking maybe it is possible to get the little USB 'thumb drives' those little flash memory buggers that plug into your USB slot and somehow (through the wonders of linux of course) get them to be used as RAM. Since I have 2 of them and only really need 1 I can test it out if I can find out a way to do it. Maybe some of you linux experts can figure something out. :P But I was thinking if anything it could make a nice server for MYSQL since that seems to be quite processor intense when I was trying to load some stuff from it with my 700Mhz PoS celeron. I do plan on buying an Xbox to use for a MYSQL server and maybe run world on it too since I havnt noticed it to take up much processor. So I guess why not get it out of the way of the zones. Also here is a link if you need some more stuff explained. http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/do...ngstarted.html |
/Berserk ON
I always wondered why peoples want to make Xbox a PC, or PC a console ... a PC is a PC and consoles are consoles ... All want merge PC/Consoles, NoOOoOoOOo, leave my PC alone, i want PC with PC Games, PC Application, i dont want cross-platform software like NFSU with no LAN support because console sux and dont allow LAN playing. Lets say it, consoles downgrade the quality of games :P Yes, i admit, i hate consoles. /Berserk OFF You cant compare PC Celeron and XBox Celeron, XBox Celeron is somewhat a mutant Celeron. XBox Celeron has a 133Mhz FSB, an chipset is a mutant nVidia nFORCE providing a massive 800 MB/s of bandwidth. This make XBox much more powerfull than a basic PC Celeron ... Only real problem of XBox (to make it a server) is ATA66 HD :? |
I agree... consoles are teh sux
|
Consoles are alright , nice to have if your PC has a sucky video card...
For example GTA:VC on my PC looked crap GTA:VC on my XBox is sweet Back to the topic at hand - wouldn't you need to convert alot more ? Xbox uses *.xbe instead of *.exe .. there goes world.exe and zone.exe, along with winmysqladmin.exe , not sure if .bat files work , etc. etc. If you were determined however, it'd be worth a shot... ? |
xbox can run exe files using linux i think, xbe is just used for xbox games.

Don't see why it wouldn't work for personal, LAN, server. Currently I am running mini on my workstation, with EQEmu binaries on an old K6-2 300mhz with 64MB ram. Not having any problems with it. But, if you want a strong, public server, it will likely fall very short.

XBOX is the shit

One quick thing
KhaN about the ATA66 that is able to carry 66Mb/s although you will only get maybe 45-50 that is still plenty for any of this. Most will be run in the ram exept the DB and the DB for pretty much any server is only 25Mb about.
So if the hard drive could even keep up with the ATA then you could theoreticaly move your hole DB through the ATA bus in less than a second  Quote:

I said sure and because my other video card is soldered with 1mm x 1mm beads of solder. I let him use my Voodoo5 for a few weeks, and we had put CS on his computer and were playing around on it and his computer runs it INSANELY good compared to mine and that is because he is running a Athlon XP 2200+ on his computer, and my parents computer when it had the Voodoo5 in it (Athlon XP 1800+) it also ran it great compared to mine and it has half the RAM that mine does now. So that pretty much gives some examples of Graphics still relying greatly on the CPU and not just the GPU. Like so many video card companies want you to believe  /rant off Ok now that I have filled your minds with useless information I will continue. Quote:
But about all the consoles sucking and stuff. Just remember this isnt a console as soon as it is running linux, atleast in the gaming sense of console, now is it? [Edit] Also those thumb drives I mentioned I can also just use them for where the DB will be stored. Instead of on the hard drive. They may only get 1mb ~ 2mb/s but really if you look at the database and think about all the different things the hard drive addresses, and where all those things are it has to be basically playing 52 card pickup when all you have to pick them up with is 1 finger. But with the thumb drive it is just like ram and can address things just like Random Access Memory can. So if it can get one small piece of data almost instantly and get it through the usb to the processor at almost the same speed of a hard drive because it is transfering so little data. But it can find something instantly and address it instantly so really it will be much faster. I used to play Mp3 playlists off of them because I used to put my harddrive shutoff at 5 minutes when I go to bed to make them last a bit longer and I could switch songs and as soon as I clicked next the music for the next song was playing, and it isnt like they were cached in the ram because I already went through them it was the very first time I had even done it. :D (Also about the songs they were all 128Kb/s ~ 192Kb/s songs) So we know we can get that out of the thumb drive. :) |
PC Upgrade > consoles
|
One problem
PC upgrade doesnt help my server problem. I have 2 computers, one is my parents, one is mine. That leaves me atleast 1 computer short if I want a server because I cannot always be on there computer. I need my own and I cannot run the server on my own.
Where can you beat a $150 computer with a massive datapipe? I dont know anywhere unless it is an xbox. If you do feel free to let me know :D I am also about to do a test with the server running from a thumbdrive through USB 1.1 (I dont have USB 2 so this is what I get to use  ) |
Well, depending on how much you spend on the usb drive, it'll be a bit over $150. If you've already got an XBox, then it's a no-brainer for you to try that out. If you DON'T have one yet, for $219 you can get:
Duron 1.6GHz 256MB DDR RAM 40GB EIDE HDD 32MB AGP Video 48X CD-ROM Drive http://pcinfinity.net/Merchant2/merc...gory_Code=SPEC That's just a brief run down. Check it out. :) They don't charge shipping either. There is a small "insurance fee" though. It's usually like a couple bucks. |
Hmmm.
I know most of you dont like tigerdirect.com but I was looking to (when I get the money) to make about 3 of these computers. Only 2 for servers though probably, unless things actually get somewhere.
1800+ Athlon XP w/ Mboard (5pci slots so not bad) - $50 300W case w/ 5 - 3.5" drive bays - $24 512Mb PC2700 RAM - $60 CD-ROM 56x - $18 HD I plan on getting used ones for around $20 and I have a spare moniter I plan to just float around amongst them all. But I did find something cheaper than an Xbox now :D and less work to, not to mention much better! :) |
Sounds good to me. I remember that Xbox post, it is possible.
