EqEmu Lan/Localhost Server

I went through all the instructions and got my EQEmu Server running fine, but my client is having a problem connecting to the server itself. I noticed the eqhost.txt file format has changed to
[LoginServer]
Host=eqlplogin1.everquest.com:15900

this is eqlive's default file. If I change the eqhost to the old style format my game closes as soon as I try to login. If i use the new format my game won't connect to the server. I also tried a fresh eq evolution install and didnt patch it, should I fully patch it with EQLive Patcher to bring it all up to date before i can login to the local server?
and if so, do i need LDON and GOD also? or can I just use the evolution pack?

Theres no way currently to connect to a LAN only server. You have to connect your server to the eqemu login servers and use those to log in. You cannot play without patching either because no version of the server is compatible with that.
