Wow, that's a weird one. . .

OK, first thing to try: This could be a problem with DirectX and not EQ. An easy way to test this is to try playing another came that uses DirectX, such as Doom 3. If it also doesn't work, then you should be able to fix the problem by updating your DirectX version to 9.0c.

If that doesn't work, try this: Mess around with your graphics settings. Try re-selecting your graphicscard or changing your in-game screen resolution.

Wish I could help you more. :(

Make sure the files in your /RenderEffects/ corrispond with the correct version of your EQ client.

For example, say you backed up the important EQ patch files (eqgame.exe, eqmain.dll, etc), patched to Live to see what the fancy new water looks like, and then dropped those patch files back in to play on EQemu. Your render effects folder was most likely updated with the latest patch, so you'd also need the files for that folder from the previous patch of EQ. If you don't have those saved, your out of luck.

Your fix will work, but the patcher doesnt delete any files it doesnt even overwrite any of the /RenderEffects/ files, so as long as you dont have a fresh install AND try to play on a 5.7 server with just patching the eqgame.exe, eqmain.dll ect... you wont encounter a problem.

Its because the files which 5.7 uses in the /RenderEffects/ folder no longer are being patched so unless you get them from someone else you wont ever get them from the patcher.

But raddix is right and if oyu get those files from a friend or someone, course this could be illegal i'm not sure, then you can play and see just fine, it has nothing to do with directx9.- or your video card, because Everquest just wont let oyu play unless you have the correct version of DirectX.

Do a complete file check, patch eq.
Change ur eqhosts.txt and u'll be able to get the normal gfx back. But, u might have the crash after the character screen selection, not sure tho
