cant connect to server
 

This could be due to me having the free to play client? Anyway, just installed it all, set up logins and got to the server selection screen. Selected the Project 1999 PvE server but then just get a black screen. This is on windows 7 64bit if thats any help.

Any ideas?

P1999 only supports the Titanium client. It's in their FAQ:

I am having this exact same issue (but not playing p1999)

Win 7 64bit, cant connect to any server when I click on one.. Screen goes black and freezes my computer. Tried EZ server and stormhaven etc.

You didn't specify which client you are using that is having the issue. Make sure it is one of the supported clients on the list here:
