How do you think a server would go if it was a world that changed constantly?
Meaning: Day 1: You create a character.. and start in Cabilis. Day 3: There was a war and Cabilis is no longer safe. (The world changed and made it unsafe to start there.) Day 4: You create a new character and now have to spawn in Kurns Tower to fight the war. (New area/training.. meaning rolling a new character wouldn't be the same.) Day 5: The war is fought and your side won/lost. Cabilis could be lost or re-captured. (How the war is fought from each side could determine the future of that area.) Kind of curious to see people responses on this matter. It could mean that your first character and second character could be leveled entirely differently. |
We needed a 'reason' for the Chaos side for DiabloQuest, we're reverting back to our basics, the skill tree, and such will be the same, but we needed to start at the bare, we've talked to a few people, and Chaos had no real meaning... So, this is the start of it.
I personally think the idea is pretty interesting. |
Just seems like a rather bad idea, a day system like that would be hard to incorporate, and if you did it server-wide and not character specific a character could start on day 3 and have no gear, just seems really weird that you'd have to create more and more characters and the progression on the the last is lost, doesn't seem like that idea would work unless you could show me it in play rather than on paper.

The day thing was just used as an example. Think of these as player driven events.

So, basically every other server ever, in a sense, you start with a 'progression', there's just no Lore to it, and you're just adding the Lore part.

These types of conflicts could happen anywhere.. (as it fits in with the story) and could last X amount of time.

Isn't that what Diablo is about? Progressing though a story? I am simply trying to add some long term events that could re shape the world that players are in.

Doesn't seem very Diablo-like anymore, I guess it is like Diablo, only 10 more years until it's released. Just yanking your chain. :P I wish you guys luck, can't wait to see how it plays out.

To further elaborate. We have Order and Chaos on our server.. these are the two factions that will be at war with each other. I'll use Cabilis as an example again. A battle breaks out for Cabilis. It was controlled by the Order and after the battle it is now controlled by Chaos. Hence the world changed.

Everything about the server is the same, skill menu, and such the only thing that would be different, Zamthos, is the aspect of a world would be constantly changing.
It's like open PVP in Cabilis, the 'winner' (the one who takes down the boss there), now OWNS Cabilis, (I.E Nerdgasm the Order Officer takes down Jahar the Chaos Officer, Order now owns Cabilis) I think is what he's getting at, please correct me if I'm wrong, Jahar. :) |
Nope you got it.

To summarize they had a bunch of zones that were normally just newbie zones, but vital travel connections throughout the land that they could trigger these invasion spawns to take over the zones and turn them into enormous raid zones which players in turn would have clear out. They even kind of did it in such a way that if players did a poor job handling the invasion more and more invasions of zones were taken over rather than two to three of them, but they had a bunch going on in numerous zones so you'd have multiple raids in a few different zones trying to combat the effects of it all. Loot was a incentive to reclaim the zones outside of the travel inconveniences they impeded upon the player base. What your talking about is a bit more complex, but maybe you could tie the in game day/night time to the character creation process to determine where players starts the same sort of way how the moon gates worked in UO. You might even be able to do that to determine mobs spawn or loot tables as well for some overall increased itemization complexity. Kithicor Forest touches on the idea, but more simplified with just day and night cycles, but you could probably split it up into even further intervals every 6 hours spawns begin to change. You could have one zone where literally every hour or two hours in game spawns and loot would change along with it, but it would all look the same from a technical standpoint to the player the loot would just change because you of that you could have some really rare and interesting loot. Anyway good luck I imagine it's pretty plausible to do by the right person or people. Your probably limited more by your own imagination than anything and the time it takes to setup and configure your ideas to actually work. |
