Renaming Mercs
 

On Live, you would have to purchase a potion with Station Cash that enables a player to rename a Merc.

Obviously there's no Station Cash on Emu, but can the potion be made available in some other way, from a Vendor?

Look in the database homeslice.

You could definitely create an item for it, but renaming the mercenary on the fly isn't default functionality as far as I know, so it may require some hackish C++ or, if you know what you're doing, you can write your own methods and make it work perfectly.

Edit: You could also do some Perl tomfoolery if you were so inclined.
