Question about patching

It seems like the first line of all of the Faq/guides that I see is "patch to live", so the question I have is....Is there a way to keep the old client and still patch to live, or is the "patch to live" step not really needed(i.e. I can connect to a EQEmu server without the most recent patch)?

Maybe a clearer way to put my previous question would be...Can I play on the EQEmu servers with a default install of EQ/Kunark/Velious/POP, without doing any patching at all?

no, the emu is coded to catch up to the current eq live client. you just have to wait for the next DR.
