Any spawned Linux server I've seen yet has the same problem mine does, no npc...

A lot of this would be dependent upon how each person has configured their Linux and MySQL install.
So although the ease of a "windows-ish" install sounds pleasing, most of it could take a while...

Yngling, I have the same problem, compiled successfully, but I can't get past the "Incomplete LoginServer.INI" when launching world.
I'm on RedHat 7.2 - GCC 2.96 - MySQL 3.23.48.
