We used to have to patch to live. But that meant the emulator had to keep up with all the changes being made with almost every new patch. Also some one who happened to find the emulator in between patches could not play because there was no legal way to backpatch the client. Wich meant there werent very many players willing to wait.
So we were basicly slaves to Sony. Now we are not.

FYI..There was no client before titanium that was ever compatible with a CD out of the box. So you cant just find an old version of emulator and think you are going to play an old CD to see what it was like in the old days.
