You shouldn't need to open any ports to be able to play on a remote server. Just make sure your firewall (if you use one) is set to allow the client access to the internet. It works just exactly the same as if you were playing on a live server.
My suggestion is to take a look through Sony's technical support forum and knowledge base at
www.eqplayers.com and see if you can find a solution. I found some info that may explain a little. Take a look at
