The shortcut should be to eqgame.exe patchme, not everquest.exe. If you run everquest.exe it will run the patcher and once that happens, your client will not work with EQEmu.

I know what I did wrong in the process, now.
The problem was when I copy pasted the target from the guide, it didn't have the (x86) on the program files path, so instead of correcting that I just used the default and added the "patchme" at the end, which means it is, of course, now directed to the everquest.exe file (I'm a numpty
)
I'll reinstall it and go again. Thankfully, my machine's fast enough that installing it only takes a few minutes
