You may want to try updating your video card drivers and see if that helps. Also, do you happen to be playing from a location other than your own house where you own the modem/router yourself? If so, and if you are playing through a proxy like at work or school/dorm, it may be a proxy issue with blocking port 5998. You might want to check your router and make sure it is ok.

Also, have you tried more than just 1 server? Maybe the server you are trying is the cause of the problem. I would generally recommend trying PEQ as a test base, since all clients should always be able to connect to it, but since it is down, I would recommend trying a few different servers, and probably mostly the ones from the preferred list as recommended. Some servers use a custom spell file (or other custom files) and sometimes requiring custom files can cause clients to not connect properly for whatever reason, but that is normally only after you reach character select.

Have you tried completely uninstalling EQ and deleting the EQ folder and then installing it again, yet? That may help if there is any chance you patched even a little while trying to get setup for the first time.
