If you install the bots but just don't use them there aren't any problems. :P
I think you can also disable them, but I'm not 100% on how to do that as I haven't tried. Might also be worth noting I haven't had any issue with using bots myself.
For the opcodes.conf, save the one you have to something like "opcodes.backup" and make a new opcodes.conf in a text editor and just copy/paste what I have there and see if it works. And just for giggles, post what yours has here.
