I don't have any experience with bots but I do have mercs working pretty nicely on my server. I'll say one thing I like is the fact that the mercs have pretty solid equipment to begin with. I have no desire to manage additional inventory so it works out for my personal taste and others on my server.
So there are some trade-offs; mercs are lower maintenance but limited in class selection.
I believe bad_captain is still tweaking mercs as time goes so i wouldn't say they are in their final/final state; he enhances them as time allows.
