Number one way to prevent being hacked:
Remove any services you don't need!
Go visit your local bookstore and get a book on Linux security. Plenty of good ones there. Keep an eye out for security advisory also... Fighting hackers is a neverending process, but there are ways to minimize the chances.
So my suggestion is read, read and read some more to learn...
