There are java based browser irc clients out there, i'd try one of those if you're concerned about security..
Viruses??? eqemu IRC is not on a ---net domain, so theres not a million porn channels/warez channels. The entire server is completely for the project, and in a year and a half, I dont think i've ever encountered a 'virus'
