This is sad to see. I honestly don't know why you guys are going to all the trouble and expense to host servers (I'm sure it's cool and fun and all, but IMHO it's not worth it if it causes you this much of a headache). I think people would do just fine with something like the old Public Login and a simple web page where people running servers could post their login server's IP address or something. It's not a dig, but Hogie, maybe you're trying to carry too much. You shouldn't feel obligated to take on monetary expenses for this project; it's a distributed system and there really shouldn't be a need for an always-on login server. A simple frontend program and a web directory or something could set up a user's eqhost.txt file just as easily.
Peace of mind > all other concerns.
