Sorry for the late reply, but this one was a brain-teaser.

There IS a way you can get the program to make elevation data, but you'd have to do it in several steps:

1. Instead of one .3DS file, make two: one that has ONLY the ground information and one that has all the ground information removed.

2. In OpenZone, import the .3DS that has ONLY the ground information (I'm assuming there is no water in it--only land).

3. Rename the resulting mesh to this: "HeightMapGround". No double quotes, and make sure to type it exactly, including upper- and lower-case. It's a special name that OpenZone will look for when the zone is loaded.

4. Save the zone.

5. Load the zone again. Earlier versions of OpenZone didn't support ground elevation data, and OpenZone is designed to generate it if necessary. Your ground data will probably be altered a bit since elevation data has to be on a strict grid.

6. Save the zone again -- this time it will have elevation data.

7. Open the zone (yes, again) and now import the other .3DS file that has NO ground information.

8. Save the zone now that it has everything you created. You should now be able to walk around in it in OpenZone and everything should work properly.

This is all off the top of my head, but I think it just might work. Feel free to let me know what happens.
