Actually Goth's been around just as long as punk (circa 1976)
Bands like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend and original Ministry (was just Allen Jourgenson at that time) were all goth bands. Goth back then was a lot different than it is now as well. Most goth bands were what people today would consider to be 'tech' bands
