the newest source (and even the source from a few days ago) on
http://cvs.biosprite.net/ fixes the mob direction facing issues you mention. I never noticed the mob attack distance being an issue.. but if it was it seems to be working in the latest version as well.
I don't know if anyone has any binaries availble for these though...
