Default invididual progression server?

like everyone else i've long been working on my own server. well along the way ive had a few server ideas that, well, dont mesh with my current "vision" so they get forgotten or pushed to the side indefinately. Reading the UO-style server post just made me want to start a fresh thread discussing the idea of a different progression server.

basicly, with this server idea one would use flags to allow players to gradually unlock content on a per_character_basis. now im not just talking about by expansion(though this has merit also!), but i mean by zone. just for quick examples, requiring somone defeat mob X, Y, and Z in Upper Guk to unlock Lower Guk(or perhaps complete a quest to progress). forcing players to defeat sola before they can move on to solb (and later solc) would be another prime example.

wonder why none has done this or has it been attempted and none enjoyed it enough to keep the sever alive? anyways, might make for a fun discussion.

Forcing players to have to do something over and over is normally not much fun in the end. It isn't bad if you add in progression or flagging for certain parts of your server, but to do it for every zone would make it get boring really fast. People like the illusion of freedom and requiring flagging like this would make it seem even more linear than it already is.

Not that it isn't an interesting idea, but I don't think you could base an entire server off of it. If anything, you could maybe add a quest series to your server that has something similar to this for people to work on on the side. As long as the whole server doesn't require it to play, it could be fun.

I use some flagging and quests to sorta force progression like this, but I try to do it in a variety of ways, and not for every zone. I think variety is the key here.

Then again, it is all in how you implement it. Something different always has possibilities, but you would have to do some really cool stuff to make a server run entirely on individual progression and have it be fun. Just my opinion on it.

got what your saying, definately sounds repetitive and tedious, ultimately as by now anyone that wanted to has surely explored all the zones available to the old lands at least.

that leaves the other side to it of going by expansion on a per_character basis while still using livelikeeq content (peq).

any servers out there currently considering this bytheby?
