Black Screen when I try to log in to a server

Hey! Let me preface by saying I've been searching the forum for an hour, and can't find the solution to this, nor any identical issue to the one I'm having.

I finally cured my first black screen issue, which would happen immediately upon loading the game, so I thought I was in the clear. However, now, after logging in, I pick the VZ/TZ server and connect to it, the screen goes crazy-colored for 10 seconds, then black (still have the EQ cursor and can move it for a minute, then it turns white). The music plays until I finally ctrl-alt-del and it closes. It seems like what lies behind the blackness is the character select screen; I think I'm there, just not seeing what I should be.
