Default GRRRRR

Ok, I got EQEmu because I was told it was a good program. Tried it, and got Error 1001: Could not connect to server please try again blah blah blah or something like that. Then I went here for help and found that there are like 20 solutions for my problem, and many seem outdated. Can't actually sit for hours on end trying each one. Also read the Readme file. Now, do I really have to do all that laborous work (which appears to be amazingly time consuming) everytime I wish to use it? And is there not something to help those that don't really care much about the 'internal' stuff?

Needless to say, I am a noob. When you say patch EQLive I just go on ahead and double click the icon on my desktop, which appears to be everquest.exe as eqgame.exe says I need to run the first patcher before it can be used.

Is there not, anywhere, someone who can just produce some kind of simple guide to connecting to the program in lamens terms fpr morons like myself?

Problem: Run everquest.exe patcher (only thing I can). Once that is patched I run the EQEmu 'lil patcher thing. EverQuest loads up. Click 'Connect'. Type in my username and password for EQEmu and get Error 1001.

Solutions?
