Post demi-legal question/suggestion

I know it's not considered kosher to go around asking for client files in here, and I'm cool with the premise behind that rule. On the other hand, a thought occurs - Sony is just giving away the EQ Trilogy as a free download so shouldn't hosting source files to match that particular unpatched version be okay?

See, that's not what I gather at all. Are you suggesting that while they're giving it away to everybody for free we can't give the same thing to our buddies? When anybody does something like this they're simultaneously giving everyone carte blanche to do the same.

I hardly think anyone'd be breaking the EULA by building a free server that doesn't get patches because the game itself isn't being reverse-engineered. Sony doesn't care about what little money they make from EQ 1 because they've got several much more lucrative projects such as EQ 2 and the PS3.

Why else would they be giving EQ 1 away? I figure they expect this sort of thing and couldn't care much less.

SOE owns those files, it has nothing to do with the EULA it has to do with copywrite protection.

Just because snoop dog gives out his music for free online does not mean anyone else can without his permition.

SOE gives it out but specificaly states nobody else has permition. They own the files so they have the right to say that.

Mhh don't mind everquest is a lost and old game.
Last extension has come in september, and sony make many money with EQ1.
Sure they don't have many people like the best years, but have enough people for make a lucrative project and protect him.

Check his post history and you'll find out quickly that Matt never was a good speller. You'll wear out your keyboard if you try to be his personal spellchecker

Then again, spelling isn't really necessary for the job at hand... or is it?

Sorry I didn't respond sooner - I've been busy, etc.

I think this thread has drifted away from the point. Why shouldn't it be possible to make a new server that'll always -always- run the version of EQ that Sony's giving away for free? If I understand things correctly, then Sony hasn't really done anything against EQ Emu so much as against would-be cheaters who're already paying to play on the EQ Live servers. I think, by now, Sony would've taken legal action against EQ Emu if they either thought they had grounds to do so or if they cared enough. Why should they care if there's yet another free server that just ... doesn't get patches?

Let's be honest with ourselves here. I think Sony would have less of a problem with us running a free version of EQ that's inherently "broken". Besides, I wandered in after 9/13. :P

SOE has gone after "popular" server with C&D orders, and the version there giving out for free changes so that wouldnt work ether.

I bought EQ from walmart and one of my friends bought his from some gaming store on the same day. The disks had 2 diferent versions of EQ on it. SOE changes there distro so much that we cant freeze on any version without handing out files, and thats against the law.
