Sporatic access
I am having a problem that has been actually spoken of in faqs before, however i have done everything detailed in them and still am having problems. I will log in on the login screen, and sometimes after the screen goes black go right back to it. Sometimes i get to the server select, and it goes black and takes back to login. Sometimes i get to character select. This is where it slightly differs, When i choose a character it will either go to loading and let me in, or it will just say "YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED." Then back to either character screen or login. All of these are without any error messages.
I am running on Vista 32 Premium. AMD Dual core processors. All drivers up to date. I tried running in compatibility mode, no change in status. I am limiting the game to One processor using PriFinitty2. I have a character and have played it up to level three so far in two different log in sessions. So i know the game runs fine on my computer. I just do not know why the login server will not let me in correctly.
By the way, if i have to fiddle with the login server all the time just to get in, i will. That's fine. But when i click the character and get the disconnected screen both before and after the load sometimes is my main concern here.

Fear Alice, I'm not sure this will help but I have had a similar problem with not being able to get to the char screen. I found the error in the eqemu_config file, the server name wasn't the same, or the ip address was wrong. The fix had to do with the server and the location (ip address) I was trying to connect to. Are you playing on the same pc as the server?
Try entering only ip addresses in all locations instead of names. Eqemu_config file and the eqhost.txt file in your game directory

I'm having the same problem, and I'm using the IP instead of the name. I can connect np sometimes, then other times I can't get in at all.
login screen -> server select -> hit enter server (VZTZ) ---> booted back to login.
I restart the client, and my computer but to no avail. Then suddenly it starts working again.

If you can sometimes get all of the way logged in and sometimes not at all, and this happens to you on multiple different servers (make sure to try more than just 1 to be sure), then the problem is definitely with your PC. In most cases, this is caused by using a multi-core CPU and can be resolved by trying on of the many options linked in the FAQ in my sig. Normally, the option to run in compatibility mode helps, but not in all cases. Sometimes you may also want to make sure that your Windows is fully updated and that you have current drivers for your PC (video card, sound card etc). Also, connection issues could be due to network problems if you are using a wireless network to connect or if you have someone downloading/uploading stuff with a P2P or Torrent program.

By the way, to the OP - it's sporadic.

I actually don't entirely agree that it is the computer (all the time), I know that the eqemu public login server list suffers from the same bug I am trying to work around with my login server. If the server list is offset by one byte the IP Address will be wrong and the server will try to either:
1) Connect to a IP that is not the correct one and will begin its run into the world (Screen brightens/darkens from the settings you have, then the screen goes black but eventually hangs and returns to the LS). This means that EQ has an IP but it is wrong.
2) The server list is so off that EQ doesn't know what to make of the IP, when you click Play the screen will get big to fill the entire screen and then will almost immediately return to the Login screen.
Just throwing this out here, you have to packet log and watch udp.srcport == 9000 or udp.dstport == 9000 with wireshark and if there is no traffic going through, or the traffic to the wrong IP you may be experiencing this issue.
This is also why sometimes when you go into the public LS and you see the user list count completely off for a world server.
