Default problem with directx

I'm running windows xp professional. When I run EQW it gives an error eading "EverQuest requires DirectX 6.0 or higher to run. You can install DX6 from your EverQuest CD or download it from www.microsoft.com". I reinstalled DirectX 8.1, and it still gives me the error. Ive also tried running the patchme method, but I cant even get that off the ground. Any ideas?

Will it work without using eqw ?

If it does, you might want to make sure youve got EQW beta 2.3

I have beta 2.3 for EQW, and I cant even start it running the patchme method. I tried running it in the command prompt and now it gives me the same error. You think maybe a computer restart would work?

Scratch that, I tried restarting, still the same error. Think I should try installing 6.0 from the cd? And I'm not supposed to run EverQuest.exe, right?

*EDIT*

I got it running, but now it says theres no eqhost.txt in the everquest directory. I'm gonna mess around with it to see if I can get it to work, but if anyone has helpful input TIA
