How does the Item Collector Work?

I'm new to emulators having just tried out Ethernalquest and I keep hearing about packetcollectors or item collectors. What do you they do? I think they take items and put them on emu servers so you can use (because some are missing (like necro epic in ethernalquest). Anyone know of reames or could anyone just post how they work and how I could help with them?

They basically store packets(network traffic) for items or spawns or doors ect. sent over the network. They then manipulate the packet information into the format the emu needs. The data is collected and filtered for duplicates then added to the database for the next release.

Type packetcollector /? in a command window to get some help on usage.
