Question for Dev's concerning Login Server

I am curious as to why it is required to use your login servers? Is there a specific reason behind this?

The reason I ask is because I have a server that will be used by maybe 10-15 people max and it really doesn't need to be on your server list. Its just for fun.

I am genuinely curious about the reasoning for the login server and why it can't be available for private use.

There is a login server for what you want called minilogin. Unfortunately it is not compatible with any of the patches since May. And no one has rewritten it yet.

From what I understand the minilogin will never be rewritten unless someone else takes the reins.

Are there legal reasons as to why the login server is not publicly available?

Theres no legal reason, the people who wrote it jsut don't want to, so its not.
