Crashing Zones - Please help!
Hey guys,
I recently had a problem that causes my static zones to crash.
I dont really know whats causing it but my guess is an overload.
I use dmg101. Since it started crashing I look on top (cpu status) from time to time to see hows the memory going. Sometimes it goes down and down and crashes but sometimes it doesnt go down much and crashes. I remmember once it crashed with 200mb memory out of 512.
Sometimes it crashes with not too many players but most of the time it crashes when i have like 17+ players. I cant say for sure, cause I reached around 26 players untill it crashed.
I was thinking to upgrade the computer but I talked to Aza77 and he is not sure that its crashing because the cpu's lack of memory. He thinks the server is not installed correctly or there is a DB issue (correct me if iam wrong Aza).
Is there a way to determain what was causing the zoen to crash ? In the logs somewhere ?
This is really important.
Many thanks =D
Swish.

System info, whether it's the zone that crashes or all zones, or all zones and the world. Is it a specific zone every time?
Screenshots maybe?

Dedicated
Its on my dedicated host useing Linux.
Iam not really sure how to check.
Useally I load like 8 zones (thats enough for me) and when it crashes it goes down to like 3 zones active. I mean, it crashes the most of the avialble zones.
It never crashes all the zones... Well, I never waited enough to check it heh.
Everytime it crashes I am rebooting the whole machine.
The ram never recovers after I close all the programs. I have to reboot it.
If need any more info please ask =D
Thanks,
Swish.

512 mem doesn't sound like a much memory for what you are doing - 512 is your total Ram? And you shouldn't have to reboot Linux for any reason - at most, kill your X and restart it. Maybe you do have some kind of hardware problem - if so, it would probably be the memory.
You probably just need more memory, but don't quote me on it.
Does EqEmu still use 256k memory per zone? As your players go into different zones, more ram memory gets taken up, and your system probably starts to depend heavily on you swap partition, which will slow you down, big time.
Are you using X while you run eqemu? maybe if you could run the server with loading windows, that would free memory for you.

=p
Umm, what is X ? =D
And yes, the total ram is 512. I use a dedicated host so this what I'v bought =P
Though, if I knew its a ram problem I would upgrade it in no time. But it costs some money and I'v been talking to Aza and he is not sure if its the ram.
After some long that the eqemu is running on the computer, it starts to run very low on memory. And when I close the eqemu, it still stays at like 100 ram out of 512 when there are no running proccess.
Maybe someone that knows Linux a bit can help me out ?
I was also wondering how I can install a new source on Linux. Since the binaries that comes from the site are for windows.
My friend Farce is the one who installed my eqemu on the host. Maybe he missed something. I cant contact him.
Maybe its just the source codes ?
The cause of the error should be written in the logs maybe ?
If so, can anyone direct me on which logs ?
Many thanks again,
Swish.

here's a quote from here http://www.eqemulator.net/wiki/wikka...ka=LinuxServer ;
"Which version of Linux ? Well, it's not important as long as it's 'modern' enough. A 2.4.18 or more recent is ok. Memory usage will depend of what you'll do of your server. For private use, 256 Mb and 512 Mb of swap are enough, for a public server, the more the better."
When you pile in all these players, you probably need over 1 gig of memory. Memory is very important - If I were to have so many players on my server, I would have at least 2 Gigs of memory , so as to avoid problems. I know by experience, zones start to crash with many people using many zones, and little memory available for the server.
Keep in mind, your OS needs/uses memory also - I know by experience, a modern Linux system with less than 256 Mb, starts to get slow. So put something in like EqEmu and a pulblic server, add your OS and its applications , what do you think happens?
You have to read the wakii, and meet the requirements before you can start asking yourself what your problem is.

umm
Alright, so umm.. Do you know if it means that 20+ players are too much for a 512 ram ? Anyone knows ?
Btw, again, I use really little static zones. I load only 6. Useally server load around 20 atleast =P
Thanks again for the support,
Swish.
