Default Emu created by a non-coder / non-server guru (is it feasible?)

So i'm your average guy that just loves what eq used to be, and wants it back. I may have a more than average understanding of random computing things, but I am no coder, and I have only the most minimal experience with mysql.

I found a pretty detailed guide on how to set up the database and everything with eqemu, but please tell me if I'm wrong in thinking this is basically all that is involved in creating a new server with eqemu:

1. Install EQ.

2. Download and install mentioned items in guide (mysql, eqemu files, etc).

3. Set up the DB / server boot script.

4. Boot server

5. Play

I have just skimmed the guide at work, and realize this may be a very truncated guide, but is this the jist of it?

My main question is, can a guy with no coding or real database experience start a successful emu server with little to no gameplay modifications? Or will I be bombarded by errors when I try to load this puppy, requiring intense coding or database fixes?

Also, am I wrong in thinking that the tools available for download to edit items and such are relatively user friendly and require little to no coding or database work?

Thanks for any insight.

Yep that's pretty much it. Helps to have some computer savvy but you certainly don't need to be a developer or anything. There are lots of folks willing to help if you run into trouble. Make sure you read the guide, follow the directions, also search the forums for answers as most problems have been solved at one point or another.

If you're on Windows, this: http://eqemulator.net/forums/showthread.php?t=24611 will do just about everything for you. Though, I still recommend familiarizing yourself with the guide.

If you have never played the emu before, I thought it might be worth mentioning that you don't have to run a server to play Everquest on the Emu. You can use the VERY simple wiki for players instead of the more complex one for setting up a server. If you are interested in playing EQ similar to live, you can make the simple changes and play on an existing server such as The Grand Creation (PEQ) or any of the other servers out there. There are at least 50 servers that are open for anyone to join and try out. Some are similar to live and some are far from it. There is alot of variety. I would highly suggest checking out some of the other emu servers to see what they offer before you go off and make your own.

Of course, if you want to play on a server by yourself, or just you and a few friends, then running one might be a good idea. Also, you may want to run one yourself if you plan to make a customized server. Otherwise, if you just want to play, you can just join and play

Here is the link to the Player's Wiki Guide to install and setup to just play:

On a related note, the link to the Playguide from the main page is dead and has been a while. Someone might want to update that when possible to help point new players in the right place.

The more you put into your server the better it will be, anyone *can* run a server, heck I have my daughter follow the directions just to make sure there able to be followed by anyone. However you NEED sql and perl at a minimum to run a server successfully.

EQEmu is a great way to get to know new things, and is easy enough to pick up if your willing.

I have got it up and running to the point where I can login. The only problem is, no one else can. Big thanks to cavedude, your application helped tons!

I have forwarded ports 9000 and 7000-7100, and still, my friend is unable to login, recieving error 1017. I know this isn't a support forum, so ignore this post if you want. I have posted this question in support as well. http://www.eqemulator.net/forums/showthread.php?t=24861

Thanks guys.
