If I remember correctly, it has to do with how you set the password in the database. The Emu uses the old way to hash a password using OLD_PASSWORD. See

Fyi, since the forums are cached by Google, sometimes it's better to search using it. Simply put, the search function of the forum itself is complete and utter garbage.
For example, I searched for
EQEmu "Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server", and it was the first result.
