EQEmu is opensource
HQ was closed source
There was some communication between our Devs and there Dev, however they were coded in separate languages.
Thats really all there is.

So you guys actually exchanged snippets of code and helped each other out?

I think the ethernalquest dates back to '02 or so. I was there even back then, but just a lurker here when it all began. Just searched and found all the ethernalquest binaries on my DVD backup.
I think you're right - Image might have been the one who was in touch with the other group. In fact I have a file (.zip) called emu 0.0.1a which contains files with a folder called ethernalquest/ - The readme.txt begins with -
EQEMu 0.1.6.1 windows release
http://emu.hackersrealm.net/
It's a bit vague after all those years..

This sounds like what's going on currently with the Earth and Beyond Emulator. It started in Java, and now has a C++ dev team. They were both progressing nicely last time I looked, but the C++ was way ahead. Maybe it's just easier.
Who would code in anything other than C++? /snicker

Zordon was (is?) really the only dev left for Ethernalquest. We sometimes talked about implementation issues and about issues that affected both us and them, but we usually didnt have any communications.
Zordon was also the original creator of an EQ2 emulator which he stopped working on shortly after it came out. After he stopped working on it, I briefly stepped in to help work on his emulator but also gave up after a couple of months. A few months after that is when I created a new EQ2 emulator based very loosely on eqemu.
Zordon is a really smart guy, it is too bad that we had two eq emulator projects instead of one. We could have saved a lot of wasted effort.

Yeah that's like what was happening when the Compiz team forked and started Beryl. Pointless duplication of effort. I hear they saw the light now and resolved their differences and are merging projects again soon, so this bodes well for the accelerated desktop Linux community.
In very rare cases, forking is good (for example, when nobody really DOES know the best way to do something and they explore different theories), but usually, it's just better to spend the resources on a goal with everyone on the same team, in my opinion.
(To keep this on topic of eqemu... this is why I do not respect S2K and what they did. They took the code, closed it up, started their own login server... and then give very little back (by my understanding) to the project that made them possible. Damn shame.

Actually Scorpius2K still posts and contributes here and even made his emu version available to us. You must be thinking of the other group

You're right, I was thinking of Wintersroar. I am sorry for that mistake. S2K if you read this, my apologies.

I believe you are referring to Wintersroar or whatever incarnation it is now done by Wiz not s2k. He did give some code to the emu, LoS code i believe which was craptasticly buggy as i recall.

IF I am wrong, I apologize. But I never did understand why they took the login server code (which leaked out as we all know) and ran.

Nobody took the login server and ran....
Winters Roar and S2K just refused to update to the newer versions when they came out so Doodman agreed to keep the older login server up for them.
