what is the result when you run:

netstat --inet -a -p
as root? It will show what processes have what ports open, on what interfaces.

Thanks for the help! I ran the netstat command you suggested and saw that 9000 was indeed opened. I still had an issue logging in, but then swapped login databases and was able to connect just now. I also did a rebuild earlier after modifying the makefiles to build native code for this system. While it wasn't the socket being closed causing the problem, your tip definitely convinced me to look elsewhere! Thanks!
