make sure you have gcc

go into the ubuntu package manager

System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager

you'll want to get a bunch of stuff from there, particularly gcc, apache, mysql-server, and whatever else looks schnazzy..

and remember .. the sudo command is your friend
