It's impressive if only for the planning and communication it took to coordinate 3 guilds' worth of players.

The actual strategy they used to fight the Sleeper is a standard zergfest of 180ish, that's the only strategy there can be up to this expansion since the sleeper hits for ~7k a swing and DT's frequently. They simply had to rez faster than Kerafyrm could eat through their members while pets, a few melee, manaburn, and lifeburn dealt all the damage.

As far as trial-and-error, though, they had 2 actual shots at the mob. The first time the GMs despawned it due to a potential problematic NPC, the 2nd time was the kill. Other than that, sleeper has been awoken on many servers and even taken to 15% by an asian guild at one time using an exploit, which spawned the 4 warders, so they knew what to expect as far as planning goes.

Despite the poo-poo, I still think it's a pretty sweet feat to have accomplished. One can only imagine how much experience those players sacrificed to rezzes ~.~
