It's time like these that I truly appeciate the setup I have here. All of my "important" files are stored on my PDC. They are backed up nightly to my BDC, ergo there are always 2 copies of my MP3s, important docs, email, etc... using Handy Backup.
My BDC even doubles as a WinAmp Nullsoft SHOUTcast server for my LAN, since all the MP3s are there, too.
Furthermore, to avoid complete file loss, I backup to DVD every 3 months or so.
I'm not bragging... The point is I KNOW where you are coming from. About 3 years ago my comp took a crap on me and I lost EVERYTHING and couldn't afford DriveSavers. I learned my lesson and NOW I OVER compensate!
You could always try R-Studio if it's just an issue that the drive won't boot - or put it in as a slave to see if you can recover anything.
I wish you luck and I feel your pain.
