can't connect to server

Well I haven't seen this listed so here is my prob. I get logged on now. when i start eq i get to the first screen no prob, second screen i put in my name a pw tells me i need to update eq. now i had read not to update eq as it breaks eqemu so i click no go to server choice screen my server is listed and is the only server listed i try to enter and it tells me it can't connect and that not updating is probably the reason then i haxe to exit back to first screen i am using eq plat with all 8 expansions and the newest minilogin and dadabases and server Any help would be appreciated John
