The reality of it is, it's become human nature to run around and find the problems with every situation. People spend too much time focusing on the negative, rather than looking at the positive. Ultimately, this damages the person that's bitching more than anyone else, as they are never happy, and ultimately anything that should be relaxing leisurely only causes them more and more stress.
I'd really think hard before putting up a fresh server, but that's just me. On the otherhand, I know of several servers in need of skilled devs (DB and Source).

Believe me, being a serverop is NO picnic.
Everything Dax said here is true.
It is one of the most painful things one can do.
Imagine, payout mostly out of your pocket quite a sum of money for a good server with a good connection. Then spend all of your free time slaving over it. Then be in game as much as possible to "be there" for the players and help them out. Then scream at walls begging the emu developers just to listen to you when you try to help them either with code submissions or bug reports, mostly to no avail (thank GOD for KLS but I feel guilty bothering her!). Then deal with other serverops constantly trying to worm their way on to your dev team so that they can try to turn your server into their own non-legit playpen, but actually DO little or no work on it. Then deal with players who act all perfectly helpful and beg to be GM staff "so that they can help out a server they care so much about" turn on you once you give them a bit of that trust and hand all of their friends GM items, or worse. Then deal with the complaints on the forums from people who won't even donate a dollar acting as if you owe THEM anything they want even though they get to play for free. Then try to keep your own head screwed on while you realize that at the end of the day, you're alone, paying a huge bill for a server nobody really appreciates and is just looking for ways to take advantage of.
Shall I continue?
Seriously, JOIN the staff of a struggling server that's been around for awhile and help them out. Don't make this problem worse. There are custom servers like mine that would give you your hearts desire in implementing custom code.
Jest3 is always looking for developers. Or go join another server. But for godsakes don't make this any tougher on those of us who are already struggling just to find some sort of comradeship here. Please.
Find out if you WOULD be happy donating your code to eqemu as a whole and see if there is a server whose team you'd be happy with BEFORE you run off and start yet another half-finished server.
