Default Save .scn files

Started using OpenZone 8.6, and thus far I have had no success in saving anything I make.

For instance: following the basic tutorial, when I save after putting down some roads (using either the icon or the file/save option) it tells me it is saving as a scene file, but the file created lacks the .scn suffix and cannot be opened with file/open. If I manually append the .scn to the name, it will open the file, but the only thing saved is the bounding polygons.
The few other attempts I have made have resulted in a single object, with no texture, being what I open after having saved a house nestled in the center of a pleasant - albeit crude - valley.

Any help would be appreciated, as my first impressions of OpenZone are positive otherwise; and I've an inclination to do a bit of custom zone work.
