Default Server Questions

Im so new to this stuff that I dont know what just about anything means. I do know that you have to have a server and that the user has a client that connects to the server. What im wondering is, is the server hardware or software or both? And if its pretty much just software, would it be possible to run a server off of the same computer that you are playing on the client with?, in which case, would you even need an internet connection to play on your own private "by yourself" server? Im not asking for support in implementing this, just asking about possibilities (or lack thereof. lol).

Thank you : )

You do not need an internet connection. You can run a local server using minilogin. You can run both client and server on a fairly minimal system. I ran a server w\ +25-30 population at one time on an athlon xp 1.8ghz 768megs. And I was able to log into the server locally without many problems.

Just have to reboot more often ;p

you might have to open up ports in your firewall though.
