Default video or connection issue

just got the steam underfoot edition. running on windows xp pro.
i log in and select a server and no matter what server i pick the screens goes black and sits there until i alt tab and close the process.

i did everything the instructions told me to do so now i dont know where to check next, can play live eq just fine so dont know what the deal here is.

any help would be appreciated.

If you can play on Live just fine then you didn't follow the instructions (sorry, that's so harsh, but it's true). One of the instructions on the Play Guide is:

Do NOT patch to live. Do not patch at all.
This means that you cannot connect to the Live server at all or some things will be downloaded to make your install of EQ not compatible with EQEmu anymore.

Likely there is a way to use your copy of EQ to play both Live and EQEmu--keep serparate copies of it in different directories or something, but since I've never done it I don't really know how it is done.
