Connection issues
Hi All,
I've got 2 PCs at home, one of which I've just finished rebuilding as the win7 upgrade proved to be *very* unstable. I've rebuilt the PC back with Vista, and have got the network working fine.
I've copied over my underfoot EQemu folder from my other PC, created a shortcut and added Patchme to the line. I've also checked my eqhost file to make sure that I have the correct line in it.
host=login.eqemulator.net:5999
I can get the program to launch, and it gets to the login screen. From that point it says it cannot connect to the server select screen. I've also tried using akka's launcher, and it also cannot detect the server select.
Anyone have an idea where I've gone wrong?

The first thing I always suggest when, one computer works and one doesn't, is ask "what is different between the two?"
Don't immediately answer "nothing" since there MUST be something. For example, you just installed Vista... have you opened the firewall for EQ?

Well, one is a newer laptop. It's running Win7 (came with it installed) and can log in fine (I usually box, hence the desire for 2 machines).
The windows firewall is disabled, kaspersky anti-virus running on both and has Everquest enabled as a pass through.
I had titanium installed from CDs on the laptop, but downloaded an underfoot client from a torrent for the laptop later (purely for eqemu).
I lost the CDs a while ago in a house move, but have thought just copying over the EQemu folder from the laptop should have been OK, provided I did the usual things with the short cut etc.
The laptop came with DX 11 installed, Vista installed DX 10. Both have had the DX9.0c redistribution run on them.
Not sure on any other differences apart from hardware that may be significant. Both machines are connected to the same router, via cat5 rather than wireless etc. (laptop can connect via wireless, but tends to get a bit of interference and unreliable connection if I stay on it for too long).

So you are running identical copies of EQ on each? And have not accidentally patched or started to patch and aborted it on one?

It seriously sounds like a firewall issue.

Well, I finally got it to work. Here's how I succeeded in case this happens to anyone else.
First off, I decided I'd done nothing else but try get EQ to work, so maybe things went wrong how I installed it.
Re-installed Vista.
Installed device drivers for motherboard etc.
Installed graphics card drivers.
Installed Service Packs.
Installed redist of direct X 9.0c
So, figured then the only difference between PC 1 and PC 2, was PC 2 had a copy of Titanium installed from the CDs (which I'd lost).
I found a torrent, downloaded the CDs and reinstalled EQ using the disks.
Tried titanium EQ install. Worked OK - got to server select screen - this was a step forward.
Could not connect to my normal server (probably due to spell files or something).
Copied over the underfoot installation from PC 2 to PC 1, and tried again. Voila! Working perfectly fine now.
I assume that just downloading the client from Sony (for live EQ version) which also failed to go past server select, was failing because of one of two reasons.
I installed the Direct X 9.0c in a different order to before or Installing EQ from the CDs does something that the downloader doesn't do.
Hope no one else has to go through the same rubbish, but if they do, try the above!

Unfortunately, the 'live' client will probably never be supported until they decide to stop updating it...
Everytime Sony compiles a new client, at a minimum, a few opcode values will change. So, even if we get today's client incorporated into the server code, an update tomorrow
would invalidate the compatibility and you would not likely be able to login to the servers..and that doesn't even account for new or changed features :/
