so then what is the problem? if its Direct X, what version should i be running, because i tried to install 8, and it wouldnt let me (i use XP, and it gave me an error about 'this program is not made for Windows NT) and then i installed direct x 9, and it didnt fix my problem. If my problem lies in my drivers, how can i find out which ones i need to download?

I used DX9. I think it's your video card driver.

It's your video card! Try ati's website. Find your drivers and install them. If that doesn't work, uninstall the drivers and try the ones on the CD. Just keep looking.

ok, i figured it out, so i figured id post it here unless anyone ahs the same problem. Direct X has a diagnostic tool that can be used for changing prefernaces, and it turns out onna my old roomates must have changed DirX to no have #D acceleration enabled. The way to fix this problem was to go into the run promt, and then type dxdiag. This will get u into the diag tool. then click on the display tab (display2 if using a voodoo2 video card) and make sure that all 3 video acceleration types are enabled.

btw, thanks to everyone who helped me figure this out.

Could you also post *how* you figured this out? What was it that led you to try this?

theres a support search on eq's website. I searched under the error i was recieveing, and it told me what everyone in this post had told me, and then, that if all this hadnt worked, that i should try the dxdiag tool.
