Default True Hero

In case you haven't heard the news, the U.S. lost a true American hero....

I agree. That was tragic. He was a selfless guy. Not concerned with money. Gave up several offers for a LOT of money too. That's a rarity in the sporting world for sure...

He knew the dangers though. If he has a wife and kids, they're the ones I feel more sorry for...

Lots of true heros have been lost in this stupid police action and millions more in others over the decades. Only reason this one gets attention is due to the fact he used to play pro sports. Pretty sad when you think about it.

Actually, He is getting more attention because he gave up a 3 million dollar contract so he could go fight for his country. Not many people would do this, I know i probally wouldn't give up 3 million dollars so I could go die.

How many millionare's do you see join that army? How many people do you see give up millions of dollars to join the army? not many and that is why this guy is getting attention

Lasiel, as a member of the US Army, I feel compelled to answer this.

You call it a stupid police action. I say it is responsibility.

Sadaam has in his time commited enough moral atrocities to be compared to Hitler.

He used biological weapons on kurdish populations, destroying whole villiages and their people./

He dammed up rivers to drain a large natural oasis soley to drive out the people that lived there.

He has in the past at least developed biological weapons, and was working to be a nuclear power.

In the first Persian Gulf War, we stopped short of bagdad for one sole reason. We came there to drive him out of kuwait, at the request of others. We did. and we should have finished him off.

Look on the news.. may have to search a bit cause of the us press love of the bad side... but the iraqi people are GLAD saddam is gone. They just want to get back to their own lives

Responsibility.

We went in with a purpose, and were accepted. now they want us to leave, but we refuse until some semblance of order is regained.

Pat is one to be highly respected, and indeed is respected.

he died doing his job.

THat makes him no less a hero.

But I want you not to forget that this war is full of heros...

but they did nothing but what they were called to do.

American Heros.... most are unsung. Dont forget the private, holding a position out in the ditch, so his company can wake once more day.

Dont forget the Supply, who ensures that the troops ahve food, water...

Dont forget about the Medics... who ensure that all are taken care of

Dont forget the network admins and communications, who ensure that information can be past from one place to another quickly.

Artillery, Cooks, Scouts, Rangers, Special Forces, Reserve, National Guard.... let us not forget that all play a part... and each part done right saves lives.

Dont forget the family at home, that put together money to send the troops air conditioners

Care packeges

Let us not forget the children, who proudly tell the world that their parent serves willingly.

All these, are heros.

That was a great post val.... I am in the Air Force and it really cuts deep when I see people that are so against us. I believe that everyone that is willing to put their life on the line for their country is a hero. I don't think that Pat was anymore of a hero than anyone else serving, I just think that he was exceptional for what he had and gave up.

I am proud of my country and would fight to defend it. People don't think that we had any reason for going into Iraq. President Bush made a promise to do anything and everything in his power to protect the people of the U.S. He made a decision that even though he knew wouldn't be the most popular one, was the one that would most protect the security of the United States.

Do I believe that Iraq had WMD's? I don't know. I do know that they have had them and never showed proof of them being destroyed. If they had been destroyed, why didn't he show the proof that would have prevented us going over there?

I firmly stand behind the President of my country. I am ready and willing to go wherever, whenever I am needed. I am proud to say that I am part of the same service as those fighting now.

Whether you believe in the war or not, you should respect the selflessness of those serving to protect our freedom....

Sorry for the long post, thank you for listening.......

You said it Itlruss. I agree with you, though I have never served. I think that anyone that puts their life on the line or even on hold for something that they believe in (our country, or other people's well being) are ALL heroes in my book. This is, IMO, a HUGE sacrifice....

If the President would have decided NOT to go in, then he would have been ridiculed for NOT taking any action, so he is damned if he does and damned if he doesnt. Does this make him a bad president? No, I think not, just unlucky. Unlucky for being in the wrong place at the wrong time....Are there other reasons for being in Iraq? I don't know, and frankly I don't care, because what we are doing there (at least outwardly) cant be ignored or called something other than what it is. And that is helping someone who cannot help themselves, until they CAN....

My freind and neighbor from across the street is in the reserves and has just been called to active duty. I am actually afraid for him, because he is NOT going to be with other US soldiers, but he is going to train Afghanistanian <sp> troops.

By the above logic, suicide bombers in Iraq are heroes as well. Because they are going to war to fight for something they believe in and they're protecting their country from being taken over.

Let's not overuse the word "hero". People call firemen, policemen, etc. heroes all the time. They aren't heroes any more than I am. They're doing their job. I saved someone's life before while doing my job. Am I a hero? No. I just had more paperwork to do...

I'm not disrespecting, but the ease of use of the word "hero" repulses me.

You bring up a good point Rex... I don't think that heroes are limited to the U.S. or it's allies. In the minds of the people who believe in what the suicide bombers are doing, they are heroes as well. It's all a matter of perspective. This is one debate that could go on forever.

I know that the word "hero" is way over used, but I do believe that someone who knowingly and willingly puts their life on the line for others is a hero. Even though it may be used alot nowadays, it doesn't mean that it's unjustified, there just have been more opportunities for people to be heroes.....
