Default Log in problem while using Hughesnet satellite internet

Hello,
I have been playing on EZ server just fine on this laptop, but where I am now, the only internet service available is Hughesnet. When I try to log in, it takes me to the server select screen with no problem at all. But as soon as I select my server and hit play, it goes to a black screen and either sits there unresponsive or just flat out crashes.

I know Hughesnet has high ping (sitting around 1000ms for me), but everything I have read says that people play everquest just fine with it. So I don't think it is the latency that is causing my problem.

There is a router between the modem and my computer, which I thought might be causing the problem, so I tried hooking my computer directly up to the modem, and had the same result.

I tried making a wifi hotspot with my iPhone, and it did let me log in all the way to the character select screen, but my reception is so bad up here that it dropped me afterwards, but it did prove that it has something to do with the Hughesnet connection.

Any ideas for me? Maybe some port that is blocked or something? Why would it let me into the server select screen but not beyond?

Sure you can play EQlive with a 1k ping. EQEMu wasnt written for that kind of lag.

ideas: Get a better internet connection or a better cell phone company.

as devn00b said, I ran into this issue when I was debugging the world server.

We have this internal timeout on EQ Connections in terms of trying to determine what client you are running. If the first packet takes too long you time out anyway, thus high ping connections will frequently fail.

Edit:

The timeout is STREAM_IDENT_WAIT_MS in common/EQStreamIdent.h
Some server owners might want to try extending the ident wait from 10s to something more like 60s.

Thanks for the reply guys! At least now I know what's going on, even if it sucks.

Yeah, this place is out in the woods about 50 miles from any kind of better internet connection, and the cell phone I have is the only carrier that works at all out here, so kinda screwed for playing here I guess.

I even tried logging in with the cell connection then switching over to the Hughesnet, but it didn't like that lol.

I know this is an old post, but I am stuck with Hughesnet where I live. Believe me when I say there are literally no other options. I am in a deadzone for most cellphone companies and barely get sufficient cell coverage to even make a phone call. I can't even get dialup out here.

I play on the EZ server and 9 times out of 10 I get kicked right back to login when trying to get in. Sometimes I make it to character select but even then, 9 times out of 10 I get kicked back to login. It can take me 3 hours to get in and I almost always get disconnected every single time I zone.

Is there anything I can do on my end (moving or getting another internet plan is not an option) to help?

Or should I talk to Hunter to see if he can extend the time before it times out the request for EZ server?

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. It is so frustrating that I miss out on so much because of this piece of crap ripoff ISP.

I am seriously considering trying to figure out how to have the EZ server available only to my home network so it will just go through my router instead of Hughesnet, but I have no idea where to even begin with that (I would want at least 9 accounts playable on it).

I live in the country on the side of a mountain. I have no options but hughes or dial up. I did a little searching and found Milenicom. Works on phone towers. My cell phone reception is horrible... not even a bar. HOWEVER! I got an antenna and repeater for 100 bux and I can play with a 130ping. 1.5megs down early morning and around .8 during peak. Something to look at...

This is how I found it. Any questions hit me up..

Thank you, Expletus. I don't think that will be available in my area for awhile. It looks like it only works with Verizon and a few other plans. Currently the only cellphone service that covers my area is AT&T and I'm on the very edge so I barely get anything. I have to go outside to use my cellphone.

I would have to find out a lot more about this antenna thing. I see the prices are similar to Hughesnet, but perhaps lower.

The unlimited plan looks good, but I'm wondering about the speed.

How is the upload speed? Is there much of a delay?

I talked to Hunter and he didn't know anything about the coding for EQemu so I guess he won't be able to make any changes.

Also, could someone please direct me to the section where I could find out more about setting up EQemu on one of my computers to run as a home network thing so I can bypass my internet connection and just play on my LAN? Or is that even possible?

I get so confused with all of the different names of things like mini-login and such.

Maybe I'm coming off as an idiot, LOL.

I think one of their carriers is AT&T... I know they have verizon and sprint (i had them both). Like I stated, I have zero bars at my house but with the antenna and repeater I'm solid. The upload is around .5 for me. Give em a call or email them. They would be able to tell you which would be best for you. A ton of info is on that dslreport site I posted too.

You should start your search here.

Thank you so much Expletus!

I admit I had given up checking to see if other services were available because half the time I looked my search would time out or I would get DNS entry errors constantly. My bucket was emptying out just from loading Tumblr or Facebook.

I've been stuck with satellite internet since 2001. It wasn't so bad before Hughesnet took over, raised the prices, lowered the bandwidth limit, and increased the cap.

I'll spare you my rant about it, but I can't tell you how excited I am to finally have a chance to tell Huhesnet where to shove it.

Anyway, I'm excited because after about an hour of trying to get things to load we finally got to see that Verizon and Sprint now claim to cover our area. Verizon says it has 3G. We also see that AT&T has strengthened the signal so we are in "moderate" area. My brother can get 2 bars when he's in the house near a window (although he can't get any webpages to load).

I saw that Millinicom has a bring your own equipment plan where if you have the right equipment you just sign up for their unlimited service plan for $69 a month. My current Hughesnet crap is $80 so it will save me money and more headaches.

I read that some people prefer to cut out the Millenicom middleman and just go straight to one of the other companies, but I haven't seen any of them offering unlimited service.

I suppose I should call Millenicom and find out what equipment I will need (from what I understand the equipment they provide-- particularly the router-- is a piece of garbage and they charge $15 to ship something when it should only cost $5).

What repeater/antenna do you have and how difficult is it to install? I'm clueless when it comes to this sort of thing since I'm so behind the times. I really didn't think much about cellphones and such since I don't use mine very much.

How reliable is the service? Do you get outages?

When you say you get 0.5.. Do you mean 0.5Mb down/up?

Even though I am allegedly supposed to get 1.2mb down and 50k up, I get more like 300k down on a very good day and 30k up if I'm lucky. I mostly get less than 100k down...

Thank you so much for the links and information. *hugs*

Is a "public" server one where it doesn't have to be online but can be shared by a LAN?

Sorry to reply to my own post but it wouldn't let me edit.
Expletus, would you mind if I sent you a PM to ask you more questions about Millenicom and such?

I don't know if other people are terribly interested in reading about all of this and I have a lot of questions.
